So many headlines, where do we begin. Wow what a race! Points leaders topple, young guns fight through adversity to get the job done, old familiar faces return and leave with smiles.
In the GT group, it was celebration and heartbreak all in one event for three racers. While leading a fierce pack of 20 plus cars through the wall on to the front stretch, the #44 Nissan of Byron Rome let go big time and he was able to get out of the way and keep the main line on the track clean of his oily debris ending his race way too early. After track clean up a single file restart saw Teddy " the grrreat" Busich encounter a stuck throttle on the front straight and grenade his Porsche power plant to end his day. Finally the field settled down and got down to business with battles raging from the front to the back of the pack. One of the tightest battles was a three way between Wayne Caudle, Brent Mosing and an old friend, but new comer to our series, Mike Haydel. These three guys battled it out long and hard for most of the event before Mosing retired due to overheating and Haydel falling one lap short on fuel. Although Haydel was quite disappointed with his finish, his consolation was a lap time of 1:21.876 at an average speed of over 78 mph, a personal best and Boxster S lap record. Caudle was able to complete the event and took the second place position on the podium.
Our resident young gun, Sarah Montgomery, climbed a top the Spec Miata points chart with a heat race win and a fourth place finish in the feature, despite an alignment issue her crew spotted on grid after the Rome black flag. Vic Toce took the win but had to hold off Bob Jelley and Jeff Danos the entire event. Our points leader going into the event, Shane Fowler, lost a rear end during the heat race.
In the Bracket Class, an exhibition of persistence was put on by multiple time scca champ Gary Rebstock as he put on a clinic on racer harassment, and I mean that in the most complimentary way. Max George, the eventual winner in the class, has more tire, more engine, wider track, you name it but none of that stopped Rebstock from trying everything he could think of to try and get around the Porsche. I sure hope Rebstock put some ice on that shoulder last night because he threw a couple of zingers at Max going into turn 11 that major league pitchers couldn't have topped, wow what a driver.
What was the best thing for me to see was the open lappers who stayed around to watch our all run feature event as well as the racers crews, that were enjoying the action as much as I was.
One last note, the open lapping introduction group has been a big hit and we will be extending the program into the January schedule. Open lapping and the best road racing action anywhere, hard to beat that deal.
Looking forward to January, have a great Christmas and Happy New Year!!!!!!
