Weather scared off the masses, but the small field had big fun!
After a morning filled with on and off showers and at times down pours, round one of the summer series got kicked off with a short Q1 followed by a 30 minute ( 22 lap ) race.
The weather co operated giving us a wet track for Q1 but steadily got dryer as the race progressed. Byron Rome and his v8 powered 240z took pole position with Wayne Caudle right behind him to wrap up the exhibition class. Chris Wilken, driving the DRC Motor sports 944 edged out Ben Cherbonnier for inside row 2. David Quinlan and Jeff Danos, both driving Miatas, were in row three with Scott Grainger in his Mustang rapping up the field.
As expected, Bryon took off with the Camaro of Caudle, the 944 and the Mini in close pursuit. After 18 laps of catching up 2 and 3 tenths per lap, Wilken went for it on the outside of turn eleven as was able to get around Caudle for second. Wayne was comfortable riding in third with a plan to get back around on the last lap. He filled Wilkens mirrors between turns 7 and 8 but was not able to get the run he needed through the 10 - 14 section to make the pass before the finish line.
All the while, the two Miatas were having a battle of their own swapping positions on at least 4 occasions until David Quinlan spun in 10 with one lap to go.
Scott Grainger got his seas legs after the 8th lap and eventually finished in the 5th position.
Final Finishing Order:
#44 Byron Rome
#007 Chris Wilken
#67 Wayne Caudle
#23 Ben Cherbonnier
#64 Scott Grainger
#7 Jeff Danos
#504 David Quinlan
Next Race is July 6th, Hope the weather co operates but remember, unless there is lightning in the area, we are going to run!
