The dates have been set and the work has begun on the 6th annual Grand Bayou Charity Challenge fund raiser at the Circuit Grand Bayou Facility. This year along with the Road Course event run by the Gulf Coast Race Series regulars, there will be an "all run" bracket Drag race on Saturday Night. In the past 5 events, over $125K has been raised to help a local autism education program and St Marys Residential School in Alexandria. This years goal is to add another 30K to that total. In the grand scheme of things, with inflated numbers being what they are, 30K doesn't seem like a whole lot of money, but I want to tell you how I see it.
Autism is at the forefront of public awareness and the odds of you knowing someone affected have grown from 1 in a 150, 6 years ago to 1 in 110 today. The larger organizations you see and hear on the television and radio commercials are doing fantastic work in the field of research to find what makes this happen and hopefully to one day be able to create a way to eliminate it from our lives but in the mean time our group wants to help the children and parents dealing with this issue today.
Like I said, 30K doesn't seem like a lot of money but what that translates to at a place like St Marys, is 2,000 hours in a years time that a teachers aid or other professional can work with a child to help improve their quality of life. If someone you know is in that 110 number, those hours could be considered invaluable and that's why we do what we do. 100% of the racers entries, tech cards, spectator fees, buy backs and 50/50 proceeds will be given directly to St Marys School.
In the coming days and weeks, more information will be posted about the event and I respectfully ask that if you can, please participate in the event, come out and be a spectator, or share your time to help out a worthy cause.
Thank you in advance for your time.
