Hey, hows everyone doing? My name is Brennan, I live in Denham Springs, La. I've been looking to get in to so some form of road racing or at least get some track time. I have a 1966 mustang that I'm in the process of building as a track car, but I'm not sure how I should go about building it. I've been following all kinds of racing ever since I was little, but this is the first time that I actually have a car worthy of building and also be in a position that permits me to do so. Over all my question for y'all is what would be the best class for me to try to get into and where can I find rules and regulations? Also I would like to know if there are any events coming soon because I would love to come out and watch and learn some from y'all.

Come out to the track today. Warm-up and qualifying in the AM, races between 1 and 3. Lot's of track talk and BS in between.

Hey Brennan, welcome......, your car would start off in the bracket group, where the car is placed dependent on lap time/speed. You can race against cars/driver combos that are equal to your own level and progress as you and the car do. When your car is ready to drive, you'd participate in some lapping days, some with instruction, to learn what to expect of your car at speed on a road course, track etiquette, etc. and you can remain just doing the lapping days or eventually move to competitive racing if you wish. As far as how to set your car up for road racing......, I'd search for info on 'Bud Moore', T

Well I think I know where I'm going as far as suspension wise which is from cobra automotive that pretty much makes the front end the same as the R code mustangs(gt350) from what I understand. Rear ends probably gonna stay leaf springs with some traction bars and panhard bar on a 9 inch with a locker. Engine department is still undecided most likely small block for backed up by a 4 speed trans(t-10, toploader...). Along with some stiffing of the frame should be a pretty good handling car, I'm sure it won't be as good as most imports but defiantly an improvement for a 44 year old car.
Something that I was wondering about was the safety regulations such as roll cages, fire suppression, and cut off switches. I'd like to put a cage in it anyway, I've been in 2 vehicles when they rolled and it's not much fun. Plus the added bonus of a more rigid car. So another question would be where is a good place to get the cage put in at? Also when is yall's next meet?
Turbot thank you very much for the information on how things work with y'all. Seems like a better way to separate the cars than just doing it by displacement. I also agree with you on researching Bud Moore and the cars that he raced a built. The 60's and 70's trans am cars are defiantly the style of car that I'm going for. I've been researching for a while and the set up I mentioned above is what most people are running on vintage racer, so it seems like it's tried and tested. I have to replace all the suspension engine, drivetrain, and fuel system so I figure why not just upgrade it all while I'm at it.

Welcome. If you are planning on running vintage, you'll need to make sure that whatever mods you make to the car comply with the rules of the vintage organization that you'll be runnning with, because you don't want to have to go back and undo mods later on. I've raced a few times with CVAR in Texas, and they've got a pretty healthy pony car group. A good source (if you haven't already found it) for mustang road race prep (especially suspension) is Corner-Carvers.com www.corner-carvers.com/forums/however, be forewarned that they're rough on newbies there, so if you do go there, make sure you use the search feature and read a lot first before you start asking questions.

Thanks, Carver www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qz94yveXgQBut no Carver, I don't have the blues...., Eon just won the red bracket race yesterday (with help of a couple of break-outs) with a $1000 salvage 944 that I got from the wrecking yard where Burch used to work. There's never been a wrench on the car that either me or Eon wasn't on the other end of. He dropped the car on the ground at the track after we crammed a rewelded shock tube job (he almost didn't sign up) and robbed a-arms off my project car, with an on site eye view front end alignment and I think he turned 1.24.300 in the feature. Monday Blues....? Nah.... ;D T (somewhere under a pile of broken transmissions)

Turbot thanks for the link, if I ever get a Sunday or weekend off I'll defiantly be out there. I think I fall into the category of grease monkey right now but I'm working on becoming an mechanical engineer right now and that seems to take up alot of time. The video was great, kinda how I feel a weekend of work and then having to do it again today.
Ccarver I'm gonna be heading over there as soon as I can. I'm ready to learn as much as possible.

I talked to guy from madman racing. He brought up some very good points about finding out the rules for the class I want to go into so I wouldn't end up with illegal modifications and correct safety gear. This is something I'm rather clueless about because idk what would be the best class for me especially since I'm just starting out. The only classes that I can think of off the top of my head which is car might be eligible for is vintage racing and American iron. If anyone could point me in the right direction or think of anything better it would be greatly appreciated.

You're probably about right with the potential classes (vintage or AI). You could run with SCCA, but you'd have to run in GT1, where the car would be uncompetitive against newer tube-frame cars. I've seen several older 60's era Mustangs and Camaros run in GT1, but they were basically vintage cars.
