I have talked to Chris Wilkin and we decided to launch a test this weekend to test how fast you can exit your car. Pls read following.
I read an article last month on importance of quick egress with fire onboard and it got me thinking of a way we could apply the 15 second rule to our local series. Then I read Charles Espenlaub's article in grassroots this month and I put my foot down and decided to launch the program this weekend at our race. The tough part is putting some type of pressure on the driver to simulate the pressure you would feel while egressing with smoke or fire. So I got with my buddies and we decided to do two things: We would partially block the view by putting a piece of painters tape on the driver’s visor. (Not total blockage but enough to aggravate) and give stickers for their egress times, example being a 12 sec, 10 sec and 8 sec sticker to go on the helmet and car. Bragging rights, so to speak. Racers do love stickers! We would like to make the stickers mandatory at some point and starting next year will be part of the annual tech.
Following are notes on the test. Looking for input.
Pressure points
• Painters tape on visor – partial blockage only
• Time factor
Preparation
• Car on
• Car in gear
• Net up
• Seatbelts tight
• Hands on wheel
Requirements
• Visor down
• Stop car – switch?
• Car in neutral
• Egress within 15 seconds
• Stopwatch stops when both feet on the ground and hands on helmet.
Notes
• Assume that smoke has filled car but no flames
• Do not raise visor or remove gloves
• Think about cool suits
• Injuring yourself defeats purpose of exercise
• Drivers may return to attempt to lower times
Dis-qualification
• Safety gear off
• Visor open
• Egress over 15 seconds
We will be pulling either 2 or 4 cars off to the side as they exit the track for each class till we are done.
